Best cat food for senior cats.
Adult and adult-maintenance foods, ranked by composite score. AAFCO defines no senior life-stage profile for cats, which means adult maintenance is the regulatory category older cats are fed from.
Drawn from the 48 cat scorecards currently in PetScored.
There is no AAFCO “senior cat” profile. Most foods marketed for older cats are formulated to the adult maintenance profile with marketing layered on top, and that is fine - adult maintenance is the regulatory category geriatric cats eat from. We credit foods whose AAFCO statement is adult or adult maintenance and keep all-life-stages growth formulas out, because they run hotter on calories and minerals than most older cats need.
Kidney support, phosphorus level, and calorie density are the questions that matter most for an aging cat. The rubric does not score for those - they are clinical calls for your vet. What this list ranks is how each adult-maintenance food scores on the five public sub-scores.
