A dried, powdered extract of a shellfish farmed off New Zealand, Perna canaliculus. It is sold for joints because it carries its own omega-3 fats, and it usually turns up as one ingredient inside a joint chew rather than on its own.

Green-lipped mussel sits in the awkward middle of this shelf. There are canine trials behind it, which is more than most actives here can say, and the results are inconsistent enough that we will not call it well supported. Some of the better outcomes come from specific extract preparations rather than from green-lipped mussel as a category, so two products naming the same ingredient are not automatically equivalent.
That variability is the practical problem for a shopper. A label naming the ingredient tells you less than usual here, because the form and the extract matter, and most labels do not tell you which one is in the jar.
